This
one-year project ( 2006-2007) was carried out in Ta Van commune (Sapa district,
Lao cai province) with the objective of improving the quality of life of poor
ethnic households through sustainable livelihoods and capacity building. The
commune had a population of 2,874 residents, of which 68% were H’mong, 20% of
Day population and 12% of Dao and Kinh groups. The project provided health
check service (focused on reproductive health service and education) for local
women, seed-money for household economic development of 20 poorest households,
training on sustainable tourism service for 50 households who provided
home-stay service, brocade weaving and support to the communal tourism information
center.
