COHED started working in the Climate Change adaptation and mitigation since 2010 with the focus on climate change resilient livelihood and disaster risk management for local people in vulnerable areas.

At present, COHED is the one of five lead organisationsto manage the network VNGOs and Climate Change which
includes Vietnamese local NGOs, institutions which have interest and work in
climate change response. Detailed information of the network can be found at
the website www.vngo-cc.vn

 Highlights
of COHED’s work in climate change response

In summer 2012 COHED carried out a
research on heat stress and adaptive capacity of low-income workers in Da Nang city –
a central
coastal city of Vietnam. Other climate change activities include improving community awareness
of climate change and piloting adaptation and mitigation measures in production
activities and daily life. These are a part of two projects; the
Integrated HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme for Rural Sustainable Poverty
Reduction Project in Mai Hich Commune, Hoa Binh Province and Improving the
capacity on health care and integration with community development in Tien
Luong Commune, Cam Khe District, Phu Tho Province.

The Integrated HIV/AIDS
Prevention Programme for Rural Sustainable Poverty Reduction project in Mai
Hich Commune, Hoa Binh Province Project has been running  from January 2011 to December 2013. Specific
activities planned under this project include:

Capacity building

  • Implementing four training courses on
climate change to improve awareness and knowledge on climate change and
its impact on local livelihoods and production for local leaders and
community leaders. Raising community awareness of  the impact of human
    activities on climate change.

Adaptation

  • Forestation campaigns with the active
participation of the local community and tourists. 13.3 ha of bare land is re-forested with new trees.
  • Supporting income generation activities to
reduce the impact of human activities on the environment. The Eco-eco
Tourism Model (economic and ecology tourism) model has been established to
create income generation activities for at least 30 households with jobs
such as tour guides, shop-owners, food preparation etc.

Mitigation

  • Designing energy saving stove models to
reduce the consumption of wooden fuel. COHED piloted the use of stoves in
11 household in Mai Hich Commune. This newly-improved cooking stove has
been highly appreciated by local ethnic farming households. As of November
    2012, this newmodel has been
replicated in another 117 households in the commune.
  • Setting up a pilot biogas model to reduce
emissions. COHED supported the construction of 11 individual biogas plants
and is developing a group-based biogas model.
  • Rehearsing a
communal natural disaster simulation scenario (land slide prevention and
emergency response) in Mai Hich Commune in April 2012.

Improving health care and
integration capacity with community development in Tien Luong Commune, Cam Khe
District, Phu Tho Province, the project ran from July 2008 to June 2011.

  • Raising community awareness on
environmental conservation by conducting sanitation campaigns. At the end
of project, COHED implemented 16 environment sanitation campaigns in Tien
Luong Commune with the participation local people and authorities
  • Supported the construction of seven biogas
plants to reduce green-house gas emissions
  • Coaching famers to apply the System of
    Rice Intensification
(SRI) technique. Farmers in Tien Luong Commune successfully
applied the SRI. In June 2011, a delegation of 32 other communes in Cam
Khe Province visited and learned about the SRI technique from farmers in
    Tien Luong.
