Circumstances:

As the parents of two drugs users, one of whom is on a detoxification programme, while the other is an ex-drug user living with HIV. Help:

In December 2012, Mrs. Thiu was introduced by the Green Truong Son Self-Help Group to the micro credit programme supported by COHED. Her family received a 5 million VND loan to buy a pig, some chickens and fish. By making monthly repayments, Mrs. Thiu’s family was able to repay the loan after a year.

Mrs. Thiu took part in the livestock raising training course organised by COHED for those who had taken loans.  After a year, the family had sold two litters of piglets and dozens of chicken eggs, while raising two sets of fish every year. All this has not only improved the family’s income, but also created job opportunities to their former drug-using son. They successfully repaid their entire loan to the Green Truong Son Micro Credit Board.

In December 2011, with encouragement from Mrs. Thiu and Mr. Khuynh, their son decided to borrow 7 million VND from the micro credit programme for livelihood improvement through expanded fish-farming.

They are delighted to have rediscovered to a life they thought had been destroyed by drugs. Their progress has received encouragement and support from their neighbours. Their son has actively participated as a member of the Green Truong Son Self-Help Group and accessed ARV treatment services.

Today:

Today, Mrs. Thiu and Mr. Khuynh play a significant part in community activities in Quoc Tuan Commune, An Lao District as well as in activities conducted by the Green Truong Son Group.

Every month, they and their son attend the meetings of the micro credit programme and periodical group meetings held by the Green Truong Son Group.
